The head of roman catholic church "Pope" started tweeting yesterday december 12th from his official twitter handle @ pontifex. The tweets will be going out in Spanish, English, Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish, Arabic and French. The handle @pontifex is a nice one which means "pope" as well as "Bridge builder" said Greg Burke, senior media advisor to the Vatican.In the first few hours, the tweet picked up more than 38,000 retweets and was tagged as a favorite by nearly 13,000 people. Currently the pope already has 1.2 million followers and his twitter account is just a week old.

The pope's Twitter page is designed in yellow and white - the colors of the Vatican, with a backdrop of the Vatican and his picture.It may change during different liturgical seasons of the year and when the pope is away from the Vatican on trips.The tweets will consist mainly of  his weekly general audience, Sunday blessings and homilies on major Church holidays. They will also include reaction to major world events.
